Stuck in a rut? , you could need rebooting!
Have you ever had a conversation with yourself that goes a bit like this;
“I’m probably not good enough to apply for that job”
“I won’t make the team, the others are better than me”
“She/he won’t be interested in me, I’m not that good looking”
I was incredibly confident as a kid, there isn’t much that phased me at all. My mum would tell everyone stories of me engaging with complete strangers in the supermarket, just keen to share my latest ‘fact of the day’. “Hello lady”.....
I think most of us grow with a similar confidence.
Somewhere along the way we lose that confidence, we begin to fear judgement and we give others control over our thoughts and feelings.
We question our worth and our abilities.
We create a limiting belief.
A limiting belief is a negative thought or mindset that is wired into your brain as an “absolute truth” and holds you back from taking risks and creating your full potential.
They can present as personal (internal) beliefs or an external belief (the world is f&^ked)
Limiting beliefs can form as part of anyone’s natural development from childhood through young adulthood and sits in the subconscious.
How do we get them?
Limited beliefs can arise from;
Experiences as a child.
Family beliefs and values (the apple doesn’t usually fall far from the tree!).
Your education.
As we grow older we may not even know we have them, naive to the fact that what has been ‘wired’ may in fact not be true.
For me personally, I don’t think I was limited in my beliefs until my late teens to early twenties. I tackled a massive goal when I was 21 that I would never have achieved had I doubted myself.
Can you reprogramme your thoughts and beliefs?
Yes, absolutely, and you’ve probably experienced it in your life already to some extent.
It takes real self awareness to accept that you aren’t right in all your thoughts. (Step One!)
Over the last year, I have had the pleasure of working with two counsellors who used hypnotherapy to identify my limiting beliefs, where they came from and the repercussions of my “truths”.
For the most part, I’ve addressed the major ones (hence I’ve grown the balls to start this project!), but there’s always room for improvement.
How to get help.
Here are a few tips to overcome your limiting beliefs:
Identify what you might be missing out on because of your limiting beliefs? Are your relationships, career or finances being sacrificed?
Open yourself to accepting that what you know may in fact not be true. Practice self-awareness, one of the strongest tools in the journey to personal growth.
Jump out of your comfort zone. All the cool shit sits on the other side of your fears.
Practise personal development, be selfish! You need to assign time for you.
Want to take it a step further?
If you’ve made it this far down the page, you are probably a great candidate for looking at external help.
I would recommend reaching out to any of the following. It can be inexpensive, but if you feel stuck in a rut, demotivated and questioning anything that might get you on the other side of fear, I would highly recommend reaching out to;
A personal health coach
A hypnotherapy practitioner (see below for references!)
