Checking in with your own narrative

You spend a significant amount of time with the thoughts in your own head, especially in your later years when you are generally more likely to have time on your own.

I have often found myself playing ‘doomsdayer’, in a mental spiral thinking, almost willing, the worst case scenario to become a reality!


According to the Huffington Post, there was a study in which it was found that 85% of what we worry about, never actually happens!

So it makes sense to be constantly aware of the stories that we  are telling ourselves and to have the presence of mind to change the narrative to a more positive outlook. 

It hasn’t actually happened.

Here is something I have been practising when I slip into a habit of negative self-talk, or, just negative scenarios playing out in my head. 

  1. When I catch myself doing it, I thank my conscience for the awareness. Seems weird, is weird.

  2. I immediately replace those negative thoughts with one of gratuity. If you have shelter, food or fresh water, you are doing ok!

  3. Reframe your thought/feeling, instead of a focus on what could negatively affect you, think of a scenario where it has a positive affect on you.  

Try these simple suggestions next time you find yourself trying to manifest the worst-case scenarios because 85% of the time, things are never as bad as they seem.
